In 1991 Pat Thomas had a vision to bring soccer to the Pender County community. It started off as a traveling league that played against Duplin and New Hanover Counties. There were no permanent fields so they practiced at several different locations throughout Burgaw and Rocky Point. In 1996 PYSA was granted permission to use some land at Pender High School to host practices and games. Over time PYSA outgrew the space and was in need of a bigger home. In 2011 Pender County Parks and Recreation developed land to create fields for soccer and football and added a few amenities such as lights, bathrooms, and a concession stand big enough to host storage. The league moved to the new fields and has seen growth in participation over the past years.
